Finnish Packager Launches High Tech Heat Sensitive Cup
Huhtamaki has invented a new digitally enabled paper coffee cup to be used by coffee shops and similar retailers.
The innovation, from Huhtamaki Foodservice Europe-Asia Oceania, is a single paper cup which can be modulated thanks to the fact that it comes with a heat-activated label and a QR code that connects to the customer’s website.
Upon scanning the QR code, using a smart device, consumers are taken to a pre-programmed landing page on their own website. The heat sensitive properties of the label mean that the QR code only becomes visible when the cup is filled with hot liquid. This ensures that consumers are only given access to promotional content upon making a purchase. Further to this, each code can only be used once.
Huhtamaki have explained the reasoning behind the concept, stating that it had the potential to make good use of food-to-go packaging, as customers can actively interact with their cup whilst they drink its contents, providing brands with an abundance of promotional opportunities.
This latest move comes after the finish based company invested in its paper cup manufacturing facility in Kiev, Ukraine, earlier this month.
